Air or Sea Freight for Fitness Accessories: How to Plan Cartons and Shipments

Container ships docked at a port for sea freight shipments

Air freight moves fitness accessories in days and is priced on chargeable weight, which suits samples, urgent restocks and light, compact goods. Sea freight takes weeks but is priced on volume, which suits bulk orders and heavy or bulky items such as belts and band sets. Which one wins for your order depends mostly on how dense your cartons are and how soon you need the stock.

This guide is for brands and sellers planning their first shipments. It shows how air and sea charges are calculated, works through carton examples for light and heavy products and lists the carton details your forwarder will ask for.

How Do Air and Sea Freight Compare?

Feature Air Freight Sea Freight
Typical speed Days Weeks
How it is charged Chargeable weight, the higher of actual and volumetric weight Volume in cubic meters, or a full container
Best for Samples, launches, urgent restocks, light goods Bulk orders, heavy goods, regular restocks
Planning need Short notice possible Plan well ahead of your stock running out
Typical products Straps, wraps, grips, gloves in small runs Belts, band sets, mixed full-range orders

Many brands use both: sea freight for the main stock and a small air shipment to cover the weeks until the sea cargo arrives.

How Is Air Freight Chargeable Weight Calculated?

Airlines charge for space as well as weight. For each carton, the volumetric weight is the length times width times height in centimeters, divided by 6,000. The chargeable weight is whichever is higher, the actual weight or the volumetric weight.

A divisor of 6,000 means one cubic meter counts as about 167 kg. Some express couriers use 5,000 instead, which counts one cubic meter as 200 kg, so check which divisor your carrier uses before comparing quotes.

The examples below use the 6,000 divisor and example cartons, not fixed product weights.

Example Carton Size in cm Actual Weight Volumetric Weight Chargeable Weight
Knee sleeves, light and bulky 60 x 40 x 40 9 kg 16 kg 16 kg, set by volume
Leather belts, dense and heavy 60 x 40 x 30 18 kg 12 kg 18 kg, set by weight
Lifting straps, compact 50 x 35 x 30 11 kg 8.75 kg 11 kg, set by weight

Light, bulky products such as sleeves pay for air they do not use, so packing them tighter or folding them flat can lower the bill. Dense products such as belts are charged on their real weight, so trimming carton size helps far less.

How Is Sea Freight Charged?

Smaller sea shipments travel as less than container load, often called LCL, and share a container with other cargo. LCL is usually charged per cubic meter, with one cubic meter or one metric ton counted as a billing unit, whichever is greater. This is often written as W/M, weight or measure.

Fitness accessories are rarely heavier than a ton per cubic meter, so most accessory shipments are billed on volume. Using the sleeve carton above, which measures 0.096 cubic meters, a shipment of 40 cartons takes about 3.84 cubic meters and weighs about 360 kg, so it is billed on the 3.84 cubic meters.

Larger orders can fill a whole container, called FCL. Standard containers hold roughly the internal volumes below, though real loads fit less because cartons never fill every gap.

Container Approximate Internal Volume
20 foot standard About 33 cubic meters
40 foot standard About 67 cubic meters
40 foot high cube About 76 cubic meters

Your forwarder can tell you the point at which a full container becomes better value than LCL for your route, because local charges and rates differ.

What Carton Details Does Your Forwarder Need?

Accurate carton data makes quotes reliable and avoids surprise charges when cargo is re-measured at the warehouse.

  • Carton length, width and height in centimeters and inches
  • Gross weight per carton in kilograms and pounds
  • Number of units and SKUs in each carton
  • Total cartons, total volume and total weight for the shipment
  • Carton marks, such as SKU, quantity, carton number and destination
  • Delivery address type, such as your warehouse or a fulfillment center

For marketplace stock, also check the carton rules of the warehouse you ship to. Amazon’s US guidance, for example, sets a standard weight limit of 50 lb per box and in 2025 raised the maximum box length to 36 inches, with width and height still limited to 25 inches. Rules change, so confirm the current figures in Seller Central before cartons are packed.

How Can You Lower Freight Cost Through Packing?

Packing decisions made at the factory change what you pay for transport, often more than the choice of carrier.

Fold Flat Where Possible

Sleeves, wraps and bands packed flat take less space than items packed loose in large bags.

Match Carton Size to the Product

A carton sized to a whole number of retail boxes avoids empty space that you still pay to ship.

Choose Retail Packaging Carefully

Rigid boxes protect and present well, but slimmer packs or pouches can fit far more units per carton.

Mix Heavy and Light Items

On mixed orders, combining dense belts with bulky sleeves can balance weight and volume in a shipment.

How Do You Choose Between Air and Sea for Your Order?

  • Use air for samples, pre-launch stock and urgent restocks
  • Use sea for full production runs and planned restocks
  • Compare quotes on chargeable weight for air and on volume for sea
  • Split shipments when a launch date is close but the order is large
  • Count the full delivered cost, including local charges, duties and delivery

Your trade term decides who books and pays for which leg of the journey. Our guide to Incoterms for fitness accessory imports explains the common options.

How Does Shipping Planning Work With Oath and Oak?

Which Shipping Mistakes Cost Brands the Most?

Guessing Carton Data

Quotes built on estimated sizes change once cargo is measured, usually upward.

Ignoring Volumetric Weight

Comparing air quotes on actual weight alone hides the real cost of light, bulky goods.

Booking Sea Freight Too Late

Waiting until stock is nearly gone leaves only expensive air options to avoid running out.

Oversized Retail Boxes

Large boxes with empty space raise freight cost on every unit you ship, every time.

Skipping Warehouse Rules

Cartons that break weight or size limits can be refused or charged extra at receiving.

What Else Do Buyers Ask About Shipping Fitness Accessories?

Is air freight always more expensive than sea?

Per unit it usually is, but for small, light shipments the gap can be smaller than expected once local sea charges and minimums are added. Compare full delivered quotes.

Can one shipment include several products?

Yes. Mixed orders are common, with each product packed by SKU in its own cartons and listed on one packing list.

Should samples travel by air?

Yes, in most cases. Samples are small and time sensitive, so express or air shipping keeps the development schedule moving.

Who books the freight?

That depends on the trade term in your order. Under FOB the buyer usually books the main freight, while under CIF or DDP the seller arranges it.

How can I track my shipment?

Your carrier or forwarder issues tracking details, such as an air waybill or bill of lading number, once the goods are handed over.
